Leading the Lost to Christ
Yesterday I was standing in the lobby of a building trying to decide if I was going to unload my car in the rain or wait until later. As I was standing there, a gentleman walks in, and I could tell by the look on his face that he wasn’t sure where to go. Without asking any questions, all I said was, “Elevator, to the second floor, then straight ahead.” He turns around, looks at me, and thanks me multiple times as he shares with me how lost he was. He started making his way to the elevator, then suddenly, he turns around, comes back and says, “You must be a believer!” to which I responded, “I sure am!” Then, with the biggest smile on his face, he says, “I knew you had to be. There’s such a light in your eyes!”
How does, “Elevator, to the second floor, then straight ahead” lead to a conversation about Jesus? I didn’t quote any scriptures. I wasn’t holding a sign. I didn’t beat him over the head with my Bible. And I didn’t throw a bunch of big, fancy ‘church words’ at him. I was simply being me.
So… Let me ask you a question. What do people see when they catch you just being you? If you were suspected of being a believer, would there be enough evidence to convict you? Or, does the life you choose to live give the jury enough reasonable doubt to think otherwise?
There are times when our light is the only bright part of a person’s day. And there are times when our life is the only Jesus some people will ever experience. We need to be sure, whether we’re in church or in the community, that we’re representing Him well. You just never know when “Elevator, to the second floor, then straight ahead” may be the very thing that ends up leading a lost person to Christ.
