Just Because
This week I was blessed with lunch and flowers. No, not from some secret admirer, but from a sweet lady who simply said she wanted to do something nice for me “just because.” It blessed me so much!
I took my time and arranged the flowers. I sat down and enjoyed my lunch. I grinned from ear to ear as I read my card. Just the thoughtfulness of it all allowed me to pause and enjoy the embrace of being valued and appreciated. One of the things that really made it extra special to me was as she handed me the bouquet she said, “Well, I knew you liked fresh flowers, so I thought I’d pick you up some.” What a blessing! She knew I liked fresh flowers, and it wasn’t even one of the words in my word search puzzle!
When was the last time you did something for someone else just because? We often times do things out of obligation or habit, but how often do we do things solely out of love with intentionality. Love will cause us to look beyond ourselves and intentionality will cause us to see the ways in which we can truly be a blessing to others.
Often times we convince ourselves we’re being a blessing when in actuality we’re just looking to be blessed. We say we’re serving someone else, but our actions are really self-serving. To truly be a blessing, we have to give what the other person needs or desires and not just what gives us a sense of satisfaction. To truly serve someone else we have to assist in a way that is helpful to them, not just in a way that’s convenient for us.
Birthdays and holidays are wonderful times to bless other people, but those shouldn’t be the only times. It’s the unexpected times that are often are the most meaningful. We shouldn’t always have to have a reason to decide to bless someone. There should be plenty of times when we choose to bless othersjust because.
