Reboot Your Brain
Am I the only one who operates like this? Every day that I’m in the office I work up until the very last minute – attempting to get as much done as possible. Then, when it’s past time to go, I quickly gather all my things, put my computer to sleep, and head out the door.
Now, for those of you who are computer savvy, notice I didn’t say I closed out of everything I had been working on and shut the computer down. Instead, I left all the windows and tabs open so I could pick right back up the next day exactly where I left off the previous day. Rather than completely shutting the computer down and powering it off, I opted to put it in a state where it appeared to be resting but in actuality it’s still working to some extent. After years of doing this with my laptop, I’m starting to notice that its response time is greatly delayed and its performance is nowhere close to what it used to be.
How many of us are operating our lives in this very same way? We’re constantly on the go and continuously push ourselves to the brink. Late at night we put ourselves to sleep, but we fail to actually shut our brains down. So instead of resting, we’re actually still subconsciously working with our eyes closed.
Well, when I got to the office this morning, I decided the only thing I was going to do today was to go through and complete every open tab on my computer so I could close it and actually shut my computer down at the end of the day. Not only did this give me a sense of accomplishment, but it is going to help me as well as my computer, to function at an even greater level.
When did multitasking become the norm? When did unwinding, unplugging, powering off at night, or even shutting things down for a day or two become unacceptable? If you’re honest with yourself, you probably have multiple tabs continuously open in your brain at any given time. I challenge you to do with your brain what I did with my computer. Commit to closing the open tabs in your brain’s computer each day so you can actually rest at night and wake up the next morning operating at maximum capacity.
The Bible tells us in Ecclesiastes 3 that there is a time for everything. So, let’s not sleep when it’s time to work and let’s not work when it’s time to rest. I’m so grateful I chose to complete everything I needed to work on, close all my tabs, and shut my computer down on Friday. Why? Because as this blog post is going out on Wednesday, I’m enjoying spring break with my daughter. I’m having fun, resting my brain, and doing a lot of the things I don’t normally get to do during a regular work week. Burnout is not a badge of honor. Take time to power off and reboot. Your body’s operating system will be so glad you did!
